Climate change is top of mind for leaders worldwide who are committing to driving down greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through ambitious net-zero targets. They are responding to increasing industry regulation, as well as pressure from selective consumers who are scrutinizing brands鈥 eco-credentials and demanding companies transition to more sustainable products and means of production.

Sustainability is not just good for the environment; it is also good for the bottom line, by increasing resource efficiency, improving governance practices, cultivating a positive reputation, and future-proofing against regulation.

What鈥檚 more, investors are now going beyond 鈥渘egative screening鈥 and actively backing businesses that are leaders in sustainability, in pursuit of above-market returns. The International Finance Corporation estimates that 65 million firms in developing countries have an unmet financing need of every year — almost twice the GDP of the UK.

Getting Access to Cash Is Tough

MSMEs in particular rely on funding from banks, since they typically do not access capital markets. Over the last decade, of external finance for MSMEs in the euro area has come from bank loans, double the share for large firms.

However, getting a loan can be difficult for MSMEs. Rejection rates have always been higher due to the costs of serving customers and higher risk profiles for banks, as well as a lack of traditional data to accurately evaluate the creditworthiness of MSMEs. ]]> SMEs: Small CO2 Footprint, Big Climate Impact /2021/04/carbon-footprint-of-smes-impact/ Thu, 15 Apr 2021 12:15:36 +0000 /?p=184485 More than 90% of the world鈥檚 businesses are small and midsize enterprises (SMEs), and their combined CO2 footprint, while not easily calculated, exceeds that of large enterprises.

The challenge this presents is huge, but so are the rewards. In Europe alone, .

Change in the Air

SMEs have compared with large corporations. But change is in the air. 疯拍传媒ure to act is as large companies pass their requirements on to suppliers.

BMW is a case in point. In July 2020, the German auto group of well over 10,000 suppliers, with the goal of reducing emissions per vehicle produced by at least one-third. The company uses carbon footprint as a criterion for awarding contracts for everything from materials and components to production equipment and tools. 鈥淥ur aim is to ensure the most sustainable supply chain in the entire industry,鈥 says Oliver Zipse, chairman of the Board of Management at BMW.

BMW鈥檚 German competitor Mercedes-Benz announced that more than 75% of its suppliers are committed to supplying CO鈧-neutral parts to help it achieve its 2039 ambition of CO鈧 neutrality.

Other examples of large enterprises that are working with their suppliers to reduce carbon footprint include and . Nearly half of CEOs at large companies are targeting sustainability in their business operations, according to the .

But it is not only the supply chain leaders that are adding climate action to their corporate policies. Increasingly investors, shareholders, consumers, and employees are looking to business to adopt ambitious climate-related targets. Countries, cities, states, and provinces are also adding to the pressure. Over or are planned worldwide. National and international regulations may soon require to be provided on product labels and descriptions.

Open Questions Without Adequate Answers

Matthias Weigold is familiar with the complex world in which SMEs currently find themselves. The director of the Institute for Production Management, Technology, and Machine Tools (PTW) at the Technical University Darmstadt is partnering with German manufacturers to test scenarios for energy efficiency and flexibility in manufacturing processes based on the availability of renewable energy sources.

鈥淢any SMEs hear their primary customers saying, 鈥楧o something about your carbon footprint and do it fast.鈥 They are faced with a mountain of open questions without adequate answers,鈥 he explains. 鈥淪MEs also know that if they react too slowly and without the necessary level of detail, they could lose their most valuable customers.鈥

To satisfy the demands of their customers for low-carbon production, SMEs will increasingly need to adapt their manufacturing operations to the pricing fluctuations associated with the energy mix of fossil and renewable energy. The scenarios are no longer hypothetical, according to Weigold: 鈥淓xceptionally led wholesale electricity prices to go negative in Germany.鈥

Complicating the situation are the myriad national policies and timelines worldwide, says Weigold, who provides an example. 鈥淥ver 80% of the machine tools made in Germany are exported, with the lion鈥檚 share going to manufacturers in China. Now that , German SMEs are unsure how they should react.鈥

Mayerle emphasizes that the new product is designed to be easy to use and its implementation does not require the hiring of an expert in sustainability. Niels Hermansen, founder of the Danish 疯拍传媒 partner BitPeople A/S, based in Denmark, agrees. 鈥淚 like that 疯拍传媒 has taken the initiative in this area,鈥 Hermansen says. “It understands that SMEs have the same requirements as big companies, but do not have the same resources.”

Headquartered in S茫o Paulo, Brazil, Eureka Coworking has offices in the city and its environs, as well branches in Portugal. Location has become even more important during the pandemic.

鈥淭his is the perfect moment for us because most people lack sufficient space to work at home in a professional manner, and our locations, nearby bike lanes and within walking distance of neighborhoods, help people who want to ride bicycles or walk to work,鈥 said Daniel Moral, co-founder and CEO of Eureka Coworking. 鈥淲e talked with our clients and decided to open together using safety measures.鈥

Hackathon Surfaced Innovation Amid Pandemic

Among those safety measures will be a graphical space management tool designed to help better manage Eureka鈥檚 coworking spaces in the wake of the pandemic.

It was the winning entry in a sponsored by 疯拍传媒 and Intel to co-innovate solutions on top of for a post-pandemic office. Moral expects the tool would help its clients meet social distancing regulations, dynamically adjusting desk locations and meeting room configurations as worker capacity changes. The hackathon attracted two Intel partners that iterated Internet of Things (IoT)-based examples 鈥 most notably a hacked coffee machine, cameras for monitoring social distance, and a totem thermometer for real-time temperature measurement.

鈥湻枧拇 and Intel have a long history of co-innovation, partnering with a diverse ecosystem, as well as customers, to create disruptive solutions together,鈥 said Gisselle Ruiz Lanza, country manager at Intel Brazil. 鈥淲e鈥檙e excited about this incredible opportunity to help drive partner innovation that will meet fast-changing market demands.鈥

In other ideas developed as part of the hackathon, onsite workers could use a mobile app to order coffee from a machine with IoT-based sensors. The app would send an alert when the brew was ready for pickup at the in-office coffee station. Another prototype would use cameras to monitor communal spaces, reminding people with alerts on their mobile devices to maintain social distancing.

Fast Post-Pandemic Response

Early on, Eureka began using world-class social distancing protocols and developed a to share back-to-work safety best practices with clients and the general public. Everyday safety measures in coworking spaces included a 50 percent reduction in meeting room capacity, desks spaced much further apart than before, more frequent sanitized cleaning protocols, and readily available personal protection equipment, such as masks and face shields. In every office, signs and posters remind people to socially distance, watch for symptoms of COVID-19, and stay home if they feel ill.

Scaling Up for International Growth

Q: Congratulations to you and your team on a stellar first year. Can you tell us more about the journey so far?

A: The last year kept us very busy, with the ongoing pandemic requiring us to accelerate the transformation to remote and digital partner enablement. We put the long-term enablement strategy in place, and now we have a great story to tell about global partner enablement at 疯拍传媒. I am very proud to lead an extraordinary team of individuals whose work has had a tremendous impact so far.

This past year we have been focused on bringing the ive to our ecosystem, helping our partners innovate, grow, and deliver exceptional experiences. Partners are more relevant than ever to 疯拍传媒鈥檚 success because our partner ecosystem has the potential and capabilities to deliver the Intelligent Enterprise to our customers. Providing our partners with the best-in-class enablement in the industry is not only a competitive advantage for 疯拍传媒, but also helps ensure that our partners deliver a world-class experience to their customers 鈥 every single time.

Can you talk about the key focus areas for the last 12 months? How has the partner learning experience transformed as a result of addressing these?

We set ambitious goals that are driving us forward and taking partner enablement to another level. This past year we took significant steps in addressing these goals.

First, we focused on providing a one-stop-shop for partner enablement consumption within , where partners can easily access all enablement content. Through this platform, we launched over 160 . These are role-based, according to the individual resource needs of our partners, and go beyond normal classroom training, with experiential learning and hands-on coaching. We cover the entire 疯拍传媒 solution portfolio.

In addition, we launched more than 35 with outcome-based guidance for partner C-suites and decision-makers. This allows partners to effectively identify the enablement needs for their teams鈥 individual roles, and the required investment into learning secures their business decisions. They can increase or change their footprint within the 疯拍传媒 solution portfolio, build implementation quality, demo excellence, package their customer offerings, as well as keep their skills current and up to date.

And it goes without saying that our partners鈥 input is fundamental. This year, we established a continuous listening and improvement cycle as part of our Next-Generation Partnering initiative, including a partner enablement experience survey.听 Having received over 6,000 responses, we are committed to acting on the feedback to deliver the best experience going forward.

What do you consider as some of your biggest achievements, and how do you measure them?

We have had a jam-packed 12 months of development in Global Partner Enablement.

For me, was one of the peak moments of the year 鈥 not only because our team was heavily involved in the execution of the event, but also because we launched some of the most pivotal Next-Generation Partnering initiatives in the partner enablement and experience space. The event itself was a huge success and had more than 16,750 registrations and 11,500 attendees on the day. In addition to the fantastic keynotes, 疯拍传媒 CEO Christian Klein joined to echo his belief in and the commitment of our ecosystem to deliver the Intelligent Enterprise together.

We introduced a shared option for the partner demo environment, which gives 疯拍传媒 partners听free access to a new shared demo landscape with dedicated enablement,听to expedite sales conversations and demonstrate the power of the Intelligent Enterprise. This is a major milestone and a key highlight for us and, ultimately, for our partners, and I am very proud of what the team has achieved. Since the launch in early June, more than 695 partner companies have completed the mandatory training, of which more than 440 are already demoing in the .

At the same time, we are extending 疯拍传媒鈥檚 commitment to share resources to support our partner business and their customers. From July 1, 疯拍传媒 partners meeting the criteria can get for 12 months.

Our partners deliver 90 percent of 疯拍传媒 projects to our customers.听The quality of those services is critical听to customer success. Within the partner delivery quality framework, our team provides the partners need to enhance project quality, build听consultant听capacity, and safeguard the delivery of partner-led customer projects.

As we experience the effects of COVID-19, what is your team doing to help build the path to business resiliency?

Now more than ever, agility, innovation, and the听ability to redesign and sharpen business processes is crucial to business health and future competitiveness. It is imperative that software implementation projects can be delivered swiftly, without risk, and with a clear and predictable outcome and fast ROI.

Many of our听听already contain offerings that are highly relevant in our 鈥渘ew鈥 world of social distancing 鈥 such as remote learning, improved analytics, and increased supply chain elasticity and efficiency. These solutions are combinations of market-leading 疯拍传媒 software and a partner鈥檚 services and intellectual property, creating a unique and highly targeted offering. Currently, there are more than 1,100 solutions created by over 440 疯拍传媒 partners to choose from.

In addition, to help midsize customers resolve the current challenges quickly, recover, and build resiliency for the future, based on a predefined scope that can be delivered by partners remotely, with implementation in days or weeks rather than months, with low to no project risk. Based on this relevance, more than 140 partner packages are ready to be consumed by customers in the COVID context.

The transformation to digital partner enablement accelerated dramatically in the last months and, going forward, virtual partner enablement will be the new normal. From an enablement perspective, we responded to this need and offered听听on how to use digital tools on a daily basis to meet, interact, and collaborate virtually as well as on best practices to create engaging virtual training content with听听technology.

Looking ahead, what can 疯拍传媒 partners expect?

In 2020, our team has been recognized and rewarded for our work and our cross-collaboration capabilities. Going forward, we are committed to delivering what our partners ask of us and need the most, helping them to deliver the Intelligent Enterprise for our joint customers.

Delivering the best enablement experience to our partners can only happen if we continuously demonstrate and deliver excellence by ensuring all our partners are provided with the right capacity and competencies. We also must lower the costs of partnering, including cost of learning, and offer the same demo capabilities to partners as 疯拍传媒 presales.

For instance, our plan for the coming months is to add up to 20 intelligent enterprise online demos to the 疯拍传媒 Partner Demo Environment. We will also continuously increase the number of more than 250 existing offline scenarios for partners in 疯拍传媒 Demo Store 鈥 packed with the latest technology innovations, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. In addition, service partners can expect higher value coaching to deliver successful implementations to their customers.

With SMEs accounting for about 80 percent of our customer base, we understand their need to optimize and simplify IT processes. We will deliver an intelligent enterprise story to 疯拍传媒 Business One and bring intelligence and automation to fast-growing cloud midmarket businesses with 疯拍传媒 Business ByDesign. Helping customers become intelligent enterprises will require the right combination of technology and expertise from 疯拍传媒 and our partner ecosystem, who are uniquely positioned to deliver the intelligent enterprise strategy and message.

How did you personally experience the last few months, and how has your own daily life been affected?

I am convinced that COVID-19 has changed all our lives, and it is on each of us to take away some positive gains on the private and business sides. In the very first phase, it was about securing health and keeping the lights on. Then, we quickly switched gears to transform the services to our partners to help ensure we add the same value in a remote environment. Partners麓 responses to that were very encouraging and rewarding. The digital way of delivering our job will give us a maximum of scale. Once the pandemic is safely behind us, we look forward to meeting our partner family in person and maintaining our trustful relationships.

During the lockdown, I learned how to be more flexible at balancing my time between family and work. In the future, I will travel less and work from home more often for a healthy mix 鈥 that鈥檚 a gain for my personal life!

What do you do when you are not leading Global Partner Enablement at 疯拍传媒?

There is a very simple answer to that question! As a father of three children, I spend and enjoy as much time as possible with my family 鈥 sharing a good meal, sitting at the table with the entire family, or enjoying a good bottle of wine with my wife and our friends.

COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on restaurants everywhere. Some are staying afloat with take-out and delivery service. Those that plan on surviving are looking for new ways to keep their businesses afloat.

To increase that margin of safety, French startup aumenu worked with 疯拍传媒 partner W3COM to develop a fast and efficient way to eliminate at least one source of potential contagion: the menu.

Imagine entering your favorite eatery. You are seated and a friendly waiter greets you and takes your drink order. But then, instead of handing over menus, the server motions to a QR code on your table.

You鈥檝e seen these before: a grid of small, black squares on a white background. QR stands for quick response, and you see why after you scan it with your phone and the restaurant鈥檚 menu instantly appears on your screen 鈥 touched by no one but you.

This feature alone would close the sale for most concerned restaurant owners, but the product also delivers additional value to the restaurateur and a unique experience for patrons.

Simplified Solution

QR codes are not new. Restaurants could do this work on their own, but the process of transforming printed menus into digital files is resource intensive. Plus, the quality of the labels would be poor and the cost to replace them high.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 do high-quality printing with a home laser printer,鈥 says Guillaume Boucher, CEO of W3COM. 鈥淭hat paper can鈥檛 survive the daily, aggressive cleaning required by a restaurant. The owner would be re-printing labels constantly.鈥

The process from aumenu and W3COM takes the restaurant鈥檚 menu in whatever file they share 鈥 Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel 鈥 and quickly transforms it into viewable web pages, complete with tasty photos.

鈥淟ife will be very complicated for owners as restaurants re-open to the public,鈥 says Boucher. 鈥淭hey won鈥檛 have time to go on their websites and turn menus into digital files or, worse yet, start retyping existing menus.鈥

This will be a new and unique experience for customers. After scanning the QR code, diners can enter their email address if they like. This makes it possible to deliver a separate bill to each patron. It also alerts the restaurant when a loyal customer has returned. That can mean a free drink or appetizer.

The system was designed in hosted by 疯拍传媒, making it easily scalable. 鈥淲e are looking for partners in countries beyond France,鈥 says Boucher. 鈥淎nd because the data in 疯拍传媒 Business One is so well structured, swapping languages and currencies will be easy.鈥

But without someone to translate them into reality, all too often they can go nowhere.

Innovation managers from the 疯拍传媒 Digital Business Services organization in the Middle and Eastern Europe (MEE) region are skilled in spotting topics that generate value for companies and for making these ideas happen.

Andreas Spahn knows the stumbling blocks that prevent companies from pursuing innovation. Most are set up to optimally manage the business model that is making them successful right now.

鈥淎ll the company鈥檚 structures, processes, tools, and cultures are geared toward doing what it has always done,鈥 says Spahn, an innovation and technology architect for the Middle and Eastern Europe (MEE) region in 疯拍传媒 Digital Business Services. 鈥淭hese days, most business leaders and managers know that they have to innovate. The difficult part is putting ideas into operation to help ensure innovations are a success long term.鈥

For example, if an employee has a good suggestion on how to automate a process but has nowhere to take their idea, then they may not follow it up. Other companies have the opposite problem: They pursue too many ideas at the same time without prioritizing them.

There is no one right way to go about digital transformation. Each company is unique in terms of its size and culture, and how much experience it has with digital technologies. Companies that are particularly innovative tend to have appointed a chief digital officer, set up digital labs or incubators for startups, or actively go out and scout for technologies to drive digital transformation. Others stick to a zero-defect mentality.

Friedrich鈥檚 answer is a range of formats to suit different requirements. Some customers want to optimize processes, some want to use machine learning for rapid prototyping, and others look to create new digital platform business models.

Friedrich has each customer start with an innovation assessment, a three-hour workshop at which the company and 疯拍传媒 present what innovation means to them. The idea is to understand each company鈥檚 narrative and gear it toward the future. 鈥淪uccessful organizations have to think exponentially if they are to tap into openness and transparency in entirely new ways,鈥 says Friedrich.
