Paul Saunders, head of Product Strategy and chief evangelist of Cloud ERP for 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA, is interviewed by Laura Marwood, Ph.D., Cloud ERP product specialist, on the many issues surrounding trust in the context of AI in enterprise resource planning (ERP).

When technology advances faster than people and processes, adoption can be a challenge. For these reasons, it鈥檚 important for companies such as 疯拍传媒 to pay as much attention to trust as they do to the technology.

In the interview, Saunders explains this and other aspects of the changing relationship between humans. The former Gartner analyst believes that this changed relationship has pushed trust to the top of the corporate agenda and made 疯拍传媒鈥檚 commitment to relevant, reliable, and responsible business AI all the more crucial.

鈥淭he relationship between 疯拍传媒 and our customers for the longest time was transactional,鈥� he says. But the shift to the cloud has changed that. From the customer鈥檚 perspective, in a cloud environment the SaaS vendor is effectively running the business and that requires a whole new level of trust.

As Saunders notes, “When a data center goes down the customer can’t just say, ‘Hey Bob, get down to the computer room and reboot the box.’ Now, with AI, it’s not just the data we’re providing, but information and recommendations. And some of those recommendations might challenge what the person thinks intuitively.”

For example, when Saunders was CIO of a golf cart maker in Georgia that shipped the carts all over the United States, he put in an early AI-based route planning package designed to optimize the deliveries of the carts to customers across the country.  

But despite the potential efficiency gains promised by the technology, the CEO who had run the company for 40 years and was accustomed to relying on his own judgment overruled the software and insisted that the drivers follow his preferred delivery route.

This resistance to change reflects a broader reluctance to embrace data-driven decision-making, with individuals often interpreting data in a way that reinforces their existing beliefs rather than challenging them.

When faced with the suggestion from a machine to do something different, most people will only follow the advice if they have solid confidence in the accuracy of the underlying data and can retain oversight of the process. 

That, according to Saunders, plays to 疯拍传媒鈥檚 advantage. He acknowledges that 疯拍传媒 is sometimes considered to be 鈥渁 little bit old fashioned,” but also thought of as “incredibly reliable and trustworthy.鈥� 

In such a fast-changing and unpredictable environment 鈥� one in which many experts, including Saunders, predict that at least one big brand name company will be in the news 鈥渇or doing something terrible with AI鈥� 鈥� 疯拍传媒鈥檚 commitment to delivering dependable solutions infused with relevant, reliable, and responsible business AI is key. 

For Saunders, the importance of fostering trust and confidence in both the technology itself and the organizations deploying it, particularly in industries where risk aversion and conservatism are prevalent, cannot be overstated.  

But he also believes that organizations need to strike a balance between automation and human intervention, recognizing that while AI can streamline processes and improve efficiency, human judgment and oversight remain essential for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated insights.  

In the end, what really matters to customers is not the technology itself, but the business value that it creates. 鈥淚f you go to any CEO or CFO, they will tell you they only care about three things: revenue, cost, and risk. That鈥檚 it.鈥�

Ultimately, he says, 鈥淓verything we do has to show the business value.鈥� 

The global producer of dairy and farming machinery with 18 factories worldwide chose to build its new technology foundation in the cloud to achieve a more standardized system that would harmonize various nomenclature, processes and data required to develop new solutions for its customers. This is part of DeLaval鈥檚 strategy to become an even better partner for its customers and to transform itself into a data-driven organization.

To address the challenges of manual processes, lack of accurate information, and decentralization of maintenance processes, Petrobras sought help from 疯拍传媒 to implement an innovative new solution.

The Need for Transparency of Asset Management Processes and Value Chain

The company’s use of manual spreadsheets and the lack of real-time insights and transparency into the asset management process hindered its ability to make informed decisions. Additionally, regular failures and disruptions, as well as synchronization issues with supplier assets and third-party products, impacted worker morale and overall efficiency.

鈥淲e lacked real-time insights and transparency into the asset management process and value chain to make informed decisions based on real-time data,” explained Bruno Vidal, business applications consultant at Petrobras. “We were looking for a best-in-class platform that could provide a central view of our mission-critical assets, allowing our assets and data to work in harmony.”

Petrobras needed a solution that could provide real-time insights, reduce downtime, and align with its wider ERP and digital transformation strategy.

Building on Petrobras鈥� Ongoing 疯拍传媒 Journey

Petrobras looked to due to its rich 疯拍传媒 ecosystem and legacy. Building on its ongoing 疯拍传媒 journey, the company saw an opportunity to enhance its 疯拍传媒 footprint across the organization and implement other 疯拍传媒 innovations.

鈥淲e had an 疯拍传媒 legacy, a technological program to implement , and we had a strong operational demand for an asset management solution,” Vidal shared. “Together, this created a powerful business case for 疯拍传媒-powered intelligent asset management solutions and tied in with our 疯拍传媒鈥揻irst approach.鈥�

From Proof of Concept to Successful Pilot Implementation and Beyond

In 2020, Petrobras conducted a proof of concept to evaluate the feasibility and potential of 疯拍传媒 Intelligent Asset Management. The successful execution of the solution led to the selection of the for a pilot implementation project. The BUZIOS field is the world鈥檚 largest ultra-deepwater reservoir, representing almost 16 percent of oil and gas production for Petrobras.

鈥淕iven the size of the BUZIOS field, even a small return of value has the potential to generate a huge return for the company with reduced downtime and increased efficiency,鈥� said Vidal.

Thus, the project initially focused on a limited scope, including 疯拍传媒 Asset Strategy and Performance Management for reliability assessments and 疯拍传媒 Predictive Asset Insights for equipment monitoring and failure predictions. The pilot implementation project started with one unit and expanded to include all units and critical systems. such as gas compression, oil and gas production gathering, fire and gas detection, firefighting, and energy generation. These systems involved a significant amount of maintenance and reliability data.

Leveraging Machine Learning to Detect Errors and Predict Failure

In addition to the pilot implementation, Petrobras activated the machine learning engine in the 疯拍传媒 solutions as a pilot project for anomaly detection and failure prediction.

鈥淲e had great results from the machine learning features, which allowed us to uncover further insight and make performance improvements,鈥� Vidal recounted.

Thanks to the success, the solutions were later launched to five more critical systems of the oilfield, including offloading, oil, water and gas treatment, and water pumping for injection. By the end of 2023, Petrobras had moved from proof of concept through going live with 10 critical systems in all units from BUZIOS field, including uncovering machine learning benefits, as well as concluding the proof of concept for the same solutions in Petrobras鈥� downstream operations.

Business Benefits that Create High Value to Petrobras

As the company achieved significant operational benefits at the BUZIOS oilfield, it plans to roll out to other upstream locations, introducing solutions beyond reliability engineering. With a significant return on investment, Petrobras plans to evaluate the value returned by the new technological solution and expand its usage across its teams and other locations in the future.

Whether it is delivering a quality product or providing an essential service, every brand makes a promise to their customers. Birgfeld described how delivering on a brand鈥檚 promise helps Blue Diamond build that trust, and it is part of the reason the company is the world鈥檚 largest almond processing and marketing cooperative 鈥� and a 2023 疯拍传媒 Innovation Award winner.

Growers 鈥渢rust us with their almonds,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 up to us to deliver them accordingly. So [there is] a lot of focus on quality, integrity, and innovation. And that innovation also applies to the technology we use to enable that.鈥�

With two lines of business 鈥� branded nut snacks and ingredient sales to other consumer packaged goods (CPG) manufacturers 鈥� Blue Diamond deals with variables like weather issues, wildfires, and droughts. But the havoc the COVID-19 pandemic played on its supply chain was unforeseen. 

Suddenly, what was a demand-driven, normal business became a constraint-driven one. Birgfeld explained how a three-week wait to receive cargo turned into a five-month delay. What could have been a disastrous situation was salvaged by an attitude I find common among 疯拍传媒 Innovation Award winners: the digital transformation journey is a journey, not an end destination.

Running Simple in the Digital Economy

With more than 3,000 growers, 1,800 employees, and consumers in more than 75 countries, the need for Blue Diamond to shift from disparate, manual processes to streamlined and integrated ones was critical. The company needed to create a world-class supply chain solution to improve its forecast accuracy and distribution channel, among other areas.

Fortunately, Blue Diamond had already migrated its ERP to 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA for its core capabilities, empowering the company to embrace the digital economy. The company also leaned on 疯拍传媒 Business Network to help connect, transact, and partner with other businesses on shared processes and information, replacing uncertainty with end-to-end visibility.

By achieving a consolidated management view across its business, the company reduced supply on hand by 20%, expanded order fill rates to 99%, and saved US$1 million in logistics costs. 鈥淚t enabled our customer service reps [to] respond immediately to the customer on where things stood, and we could do course correction accordingly if there were issues,鈥� Birgfeld said.

Sustainability also improved, since the streamlined operation meant that fewer trucks had to be used along the supply chain.

While catastrophic asteroid impacts have been rare in Earth鈥檚 history, the threat asteroids pose to life on our planet is very real. With that in mind, NASA and ESA launched a mission in 2021 to test a method of planetary defense that involved deflecting Dimorphos 鈥� one part of the Didymos double-asteroid system 鈥� from its orbit by crashing a spacecraft into it. In part two of the mission, due to begin in October 2024, an orbiter known as 鈥淗era鈥� will lift off and, in October 2026, begin examining the effects of the test on Dimorphos.

鈥淧rotecting Earth from asteroids that could pose a threat to us all is an exciting and important task,鈥� says Johan Eckerstein, CIO at . In addition to a variety of satellite components, the space technology specialist also builds launch vehicles, and a third, smaller division serves the growing lithography market. EZYOne Transformation Project: Flight Path to the Future

鈥淥ur ambition is to be the No. 1 space technology supplier, the most innovative and most exciting company to work for,鈥� says Eckerstein. As CIO, his job is to put the technology in place to make that vision a reality. The EZYOne program he initiated in October 2022 was a crucial first step in that process.

Beyond Gravity is the legal successor to RUAG Space, the space division of Swiss technology group RUAG International. So while it only began operating as a startup under its new name in May 2022, it has decades of experience in the space industry. With the company due to be privatized soon, its EZYOne digital transformation project is as necessary as it is challenging.

As the name implies, the idea is to make things easier. Beyond Gravity has historically grown from various companies and locations. Currently, there are various sites with different IT systems that are not linked to each other.

EZYOne lifted off in October 2022. 鈥淲e began by defining the architecture we wanted for our new IT landscape,鈥� explains Eckerstein. That process led to a number of design principles aimed at ensuring the project was a success. They included:

• One solution of each type for all business units

• Standard first (out of the box)
• No technical data in the ERP system
• Rapid go-live in the first quarter of 2024

When it came to selecting an ERP solution 鈥� and based on these criteria 鈥� Beyond Gravity opted for 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA Cloud, public edition. 鈥淔rom the perspective of an agile startup and the global market leader we aspire to become, cloud is the only way to go,鈥� says Eckerstein. 鈥淲hen you choose a cloud solution, you are committing more to a provider鈥檚 road map than to a static product. Standard Covers 92% of Processes

Eckerstein points out, however, that if you want to enjoy the benefits of the public cloud, you have to be consistent in your approach. Essentially, when you transform business processes, that means sticking as far as possible to the standard version of the public cloud solution. Beyond Gravity defined the following rules:

• 80% of processes must be covered by the standard 鈥� and adapted to it if necessary.
• Key processes not covered by the standard must be added to 疯拍传媒鈥檚 to-do list and implemented within a specified time frame.
• Where non-key processes are not covered by the standard, alternatives must be explored, such as a third-party solution, manual process, or other neat solution.

The result of this approach surprised even Eckerstein: 鈥淲e managed to cover 92% of all processes with the standard solution. And in finance, we didn鈥檛 find a single gap!鈥� There were many other practical benefits, such as:

• Managers can be able to call up a status overview of all projects in real time 鈥� for any country or currency 鈥� with just a few clicks.
• Intracompany processes can become more efficient, thanks to the option of using fully automated ordering and confirmation and in-transit goods tracking.

The percentage of processes not covered by the standard may be small, but it can represent a huge gap if even one of those processes is mission-critical.

Beyond Gravity has also got 疯拍传媒 鈥� 疯拍传媒 Switzerland, to be precise 鈥� on board as an implementation partner to give it the most direct line possible to the 疯拍传媒 developers working on the cloud ERP solution.

Public Cloud ERP: A Calculated Risk

Beyond Gravity is now halfway along the project timeline. The solution was completed in September 2023 and is currently in its initial testing phase 鈥� with the first go-live scheduled for March 2024 in Sweden. 鈥淭his kind of speed is only possible in the public cloud,鈥� says Eckerstein, 鈥渁nd only if you adopt the right mindset.鈥� In other words, if you want to enjoy the benefits of the public cloud, you have to be willing to take a certain amount of risk that you would avoid with an on-premise installation and trust that the provider鈥檚 road map will take you where you want to go. But, as Eckerstein adds, 鈥淭his has nothing to do with blind trust; it鈥檚 about objectively calculating the risks involved.鈥�

, the world鈥檚 oldest telecommunications company, recently modernized its HR information systems to provide a digital colleague experience for its 100,000 employees working in 44 countries. 鈥淚n 2021, we started what we call our I-Connect program,鈥� said Elaine Bergin, director of Colleague Experience and Delivery, BT Group.
