Here, he shares how he defines his new role as well as the future of his organization and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI).

疯拍传媒 Business AI: Revolutionary technology, real-world results

Blau joined 疯拍传媒 in 2010 and has held various executive leadership positions with a strong track record in process management and business transformation. As chief process and information officer (CPIO), he represents the Corporate Processes & Information Technology (CPIT) organization with the main objective to enable 疯拍传媒 to scale and increase productivity through process transformation and optimization powered by AI. At the same time, the unit functions as the company’s own best reference customer showcasing how 疯拍传媒 runs 疯拍传媒.

In this interview, Blau discusses his role and the transformation of the IT industry in general.

Q: For those not familiar with the Corporate Processes & Information Technology organization, what is its role within 疯拍传媒?

A: It is widely recognized and acknowledged that the traditional concept of IT Services has undergone a significant shift in recent years, thanks to advancements in cloud computing, AI, and Big Data. Companies need to double down on their core strength and USP while demonstrating their ability to scale. To do so, IT has become a strategic instrument to enable every business to be more adaptable, scalable, and intelligent.

At 疯拍传媒, we have invested a considerable amount of time and resources in this transformation, turning IT into a strategic enabler for business growth and a trusted technology partner. However, companies need to rethink their strategies to outperform their competitors by demonstrating operational efficiency and accelerated scalability. We see a substantial requirement to focus on process excellence and automation powered by AI. This means unleashing productivity through simplification and standardization of processes, powered by business AI and 疯拍传媒’s own technology.

With that in mind, our strategic focus has evolved beyond information technology to support end-to-end process excellence with clear accountabilities that drive autonomy and quick decision-making. And that is the leading aspect of the CPIT organization.

Q: How would you describe the difference between the CIO and CPIO?

A: For me, the key difference lies within the approach to problem-solving. Rather than focusing solely on products or tools, the CPIO tends to tackle issues at the process level, where the root causes are often found. Especially as a SaaS company, we tend to solve every issue with another tool or a customization and/or a worst-case modification of a system, while in many cases the problem can be solved by standardizing and simplifying the way we work.

Hence, in addition to our information technology strategy, it is crucial for our organization to fulfill our mandate as 疯拍传媒鈥檚 business process design authority, emphasizing our responsibility to oversee and optimize business processes. This means the business defines the strategy and clear objectives — aka the 鈥渨hy鈥 and 鈥渨hat鈥 — while we define 鈥渉ow鈥 to get there in the most end-user friendly and productive way.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in your new role? 

A: Coming from my former role leading Industry Engineering for 疯拍传媒, I love working close to products and customers. To this extent, I have the perfect job as we are 疯拍传媒鈥檚 customer and first adopter of new technology, all while I am in the luxury position of being able to authentically talk to 疯拍传媒鈥檚 customers about our challenges and solutions, being their trusted 鈥減eer鈥 in the industry. This also means demonstrating how we boost productivity for 疯拍传媒 mainly through our fast-growing AI portfolio.

Q: The past five years have seen a tremendous amount of innovation, especially with the rise of generative AI. How will this influence the role of CIOs or that of an IT organization in the next two to five years?

A: In the coming two to five years, the influx of generative AI promises to revolutionize the landscape of IT organizations and the role of CIOs. Let me give you three examples.

First, it will significantly boost IT productivity by automating repetitive tasks and streamlining processes, which will free up valuable resources to either 鈥渄o more with the same鈥 or elevate those roles to even higher value-adding ones. Second, as CIOs in SaaS companies are customer zero, it is our task to showcase how AI can unlock value in highly differentiating parts of our value chain as innovation leaders of the industry. Third, with data even further emerging as a crucial competitive advantage, CIOs will increasingly focus on harnessing and maximizing the value of data assets. This entails not only owning and controlling data, but also developing new data products and mastering provisioning, management, and analysis, thereby cementing data management as a core responsibility of the IT organization.

For 疯拍传媒, this clearly is the competitive edge in the AI game, as we have access to the probably largest amount of business data to feed high-value AI scenarios.

Q: Considering the fast-tracked development of AI and its potential impact, what is your approach for CPIT and 疯拍传媒 at large?

A: The strategic role of my organization in that context is twofold. First, we are the early adopter of every AI case ideated and developed at 疯拍传媒, with an obligation to challenge the level of quality, maturity, and value on behalf of our customers. Second, I expect my team to also come up with new ideas and potential AI use cases, try them out, and be equally strict in their assessment regarding desirably, feasibility, and especially viability.

At the end of the day, business AI is about quality not quantity. To accelerate AI innovation, we have started an internal initiative to identify use cases with the highest value. This includes a process that also ensures we focus on the most effective solutions. By implementing quality gates in each step of the process, we also prioritize quality over quantity. This enables us to implement use cases that clearly demonstrate business value.

XaaS often broadens the collaborative bonds with partners that are involved in service delivery as well. At the outset, companies need to think big but start small.

鈥淢oving to an as-a-service model dramatically changes how an organization does business and keeps customers satisfied, starting with product design and pricing through synchronized order fulfillment, revenue recognition and sharing, invoicing, and contract management,鈥 said Mirjam Wittmann, director of Product Marketing, High Technology at 疯拍传媒. 鈥淲e鈥檙e seeing our customers begin with a targeted pilot in one line of business, followed by refinements and expansion to monetize XaaS packages for greatest competitive advantage.鈥

XaaS-Driven Growth at Lenovo: Go Bigger Than Back Office

Everything-as-a-service business models are essential to growth plans. Long recognized for laptops, phones, tablets, data center servers, and business solutions, the company鈥檚 service-led transformation has been a catalyst for significant expansion in its non-PC business, accounting for over 42% of the company鈥檚 revenue.

鈥淲e’re in a phase of rapid acceleration, focusing our efforts on the expansion and refinement of our XaaS capabilities and business infrastructure,鈥 said Arthur Hu, senior vice president and chief information officer at Lenovo and chief technology and delivery officer at 尝别苍辞惫辞鈥檚 Solutions and Services Group. 鈥淭his journey involves a multifaceted approach, combining agile development, strategic partnerships, and continuous optimization to ensure that our XaaS offerings meet the evolving needs of our clients.鈥

Accelerate monetization of any business model with 疯拍传媒 solutions

Hu said that  provides Lenovo with the flexibility to monetize services through pay-as-you-go, subscription, consumption-based, outcome-based, and other models. For example, the company can structure pay-as-you-go packages priced by the customer鈥檚 power consumption, storage of gigabytes, utilization, and number of nodes in an installation.

鈥淩edefine your product hierarchies to fit the as-a-service world. Update financial accounting for managed services, such as revenue recognition and costing. Provide the sales team with a clear understanding of the offerings so they can articulate the value to customers,鈥 Hu said. 鈥淢ake sure that every impacted system has the integrated data for accurate and timely fulfillment and entitlement that delivers the optimal customer experience and desired outcomes.鈥

Personalized XaaS Offerings Generate Revenue at Autodesk

offers customers both subscription- and usage-based models for nearly all products across 50 countries. As a global leader in the design and software industry for media, construction, and engineering, Autodesk is using XaaS to future-proof the company.

鈥淎s-a-service provides us with a scalable, nimble foundation that drives better outcomes for customers and generates a steady stream of revenue for the company. We can quickly offer customers personalized products and pricing combinations for faster go-to-market,鈥 said Sudhir Misal, senior director of Engineering at Autodesk. 鈥湻枧拇 solutions are the backbone of our as-a-service business model, helping us cost-efficiently manage orders, converged invoicing, contract accounting, and the financial supply chain. For example, we鈥檝e reduced quarterly financial closing times by over 80%.鈥

Misal agreed that a successful XaaS strategy requires a mindset shift.

鈥淵ou need to partner closely with your system provider, in our case it was 疯拍传媒, to understand the business context behind the offering. We focused on standardizing as much as possible,鈥 Misal said. 鈥淐hange management was a priority as we went through this journey that included all stakeholders. By talking with peer companies to hear their learnings, we avoided repeating mistakes that others have made.鈥

Generative AI Promises Dynamic Innovation

No discussion of high-tech innovation would be complete without addressing the significance of generative AI. Misal said that Autodesk was exploring how AI can help companies quickly test and adopt value-added XaaS offerings.

鈥淕enerative AI can analyze data to help organizations see how customers are behaving depending on the services they鈥檙e using,鈥 said Wittmann. 鈥淒ata from generative AI can help companies cross sell and upsell personalized services that meet individual customer preferences, increasing customer loyalty. With faster market demand insights, companies can dynamically adjust XaaS bundles and iterate fresh ideas to take advantage of emerging opportunities before the competition.鈥

Q: AI is all the rage today, so let鈥檚 start there. What are the biggest opportunities for businesses to use AI?

Muruzabal: Opportunity is everywhere for AI. And it鈥檚 bigger than just automating processes to increase efficiency, which is what was talked about for the longest time. Gaming is something that keeps inspiring me. I鈥檓 amazed by the speed, accuracy, and level of concentration of professional players. It鈥檚 impressive how this industry has evolved and grown over just a couple of decades.

Team Liquid commands an imposing presence in the esports world, boasting over 160 professional players across more than 15 different games and a staggering fan base of over 10 million followers on various social media platforms. With more than 75 premier events won, Team Liquid is one of the most successful organizations in competitive gaming.

Team Liquid: Mining rich esports data to help players, managers, and teams compete and win

The game with the highest viewership and extensive fandom is League of Legends. Team Liquid successfully competes with their League of Legends team, which recently won the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) 2024 Spring tournament.

In League of Legends, the goal is to create a strong and balanced team consisting of five characters, called “champions,” in order to outplay and outsmart the opponents during the game by being one step ahead of competition.

Teams participate in a pre-game draft process to select champions before a match. This involves banning and picking champions from a pool of 166 choices to create a strong team.

Champions are the in-game figures controlled by each player. Each champion has particular skills and areas in which they excel. Putting the champions together allows the team to play in various strategic directions to win the match.

After choosing five champions (鈥減ick鈥), each team is also allowed to remove five champions from the pool (鈥渂an鈥). Those players cannot be picked by either side. This can be utilized to remove specific parts that would otherwise counter a strategy or hinder the other team from playing their favorite style and/or composition.

Esports teams and their analysts need to prepare for the draft process, as it requires knowledge of the opponent’s favorite picks and strategies. Imagine a five-a-side dodgeball match, but before the match begins, the five players from each team draw their champions from a pool of 166 individual champions.

With bi-weekly updates to the game (鈥減atches鈥), especially affecting the champions as well as indirectly teams practicing and developing new strategies, competitive League of Legends is an ever-changing game. It creates the need to constantly adapt your draft to a new environment, to analyze both your own and the opposing team’s behavior.

Furthermore, the nature of the draft process and the varying strategies of opponents make accurate predictions difficult. Esports teams have only a week to prepare for the game and gather knowledge about the other team鈥檚 favorite champion picks, strengths, and weaknesses.

Previously, Team Liquid coaches prepared draft scenarios based on manual analysis of the opponent team鈥檚 draft behaviors and champion preferences. However, the challenge was that manual analysis is done before the draft, with the best potential pick or ban changes based on the decisions of the other team. Additionally, the sheer number of potential matches to choose from and the different strategies employed by opponent teams make manual draft prediction very difficult.

In the interview, Saunders explains this and other aspects of the changing relationship between humans. The former Gartner analyst believes that this changed relationship has pushed trust to the top of the corporate agenda and made 疯拍传媒鈥檚 commitment to relevant, reliable, and responsible business AI all the more crucial.

鈥淭he relationship between 疯拍传媒 and our customers for the longest time was transactional,鈥 he says. But the shift to the cloud has changed that. From the customer鈥檚 perspective, in a cloud environment the SaaS vendor is effectively running the business and that requires a whole new level of trust.

As Saunders notes, “When a data center goes down the customer can’t just say, ‘Hey Bob, get down to the computer room and reboot the box.’ Now, with AI, it’s not just the data we’re providing, but information and recommendations. And some of those recommendations might challenge what the person thinks intuitively.”

For example, when Saunders was CIO of a golf cart maker in Georgia that shipped the carts all over the United States, he put in an early AI-based route planning package designed to optimize the deliveries of the carts to customers across the country.  

But despite the potential efficiency gains promised by the technology, the CEO who had run the company for 40 years and was accustomed to relying on his own judgment overruled the software and insisted that the drivers follow his preferred delivery route.

This resistance to change reflects a broader reluctance to embrace data-driven decision-making, with individuals often interpreting data in a way that reinforces their existing beliefs rather than challenging them.

When faced with the suggestion from a machine to do something different, most people will only follow the advice if they have solid confidence in the accuracy of the underlying data and can retain oversight of the process. 

Build AI directly into your core business processes with 疯拍传媒 Business AI

But he also believes that organizations need to strike a balance between automation and human intervention, recognizing that while AI can streamline processes and improve efficiency, human judgment and oversight remain essential for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated insights.  

In the end, what really matters to customers is not the technology itself, but the business value that it creates. 鈥淚f you go to any CEO or CFO, they will tell you they only care about three things: revenue, cost, and risk. That鈥檚 it.鈥

Ultimately, he says, 鈥淓verything we do has to show the business value.鈥

The AI copilot that truly understands your business

We have also added more than 15 new capabilities in this release to help both managers and employees get work done in a conversational way, such as creating or changing a position, creating spot awards, clocking in and out, and viewing pay statements as well as time capabilities like requesting time off, checking leave balances, and syncing holidays to Outlook calendars while managers can review and approve time off. Further, employees can now clock in and out using Joule, Microsoft Teams, or the 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Mobile app.

We are excited to unveil two new people profile experiences 鈥 the profile preview and the spotlight view. We are also introducing a new org chart experience with a refreshed look and feel. Available on desktop and mobile, users can explore their organizational structure with improved expand and collapse capabilities, which helps provide full accessibility to an employee鈥檚 profile preview, with an option to open the new spotlight view.

Customers can now automatically process new hires from 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Recruiting and 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Onboarding into 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Employee Central. This capability helps further reduce the time to hire, which is especially important with mass, seasonal, and high-volume hiring.

疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Employee Central Global Benefits

With this release, we are pleased to introduce a new benefits enrollment experience for insurance, savings, and pension benefit types. Available on both desktop and mobile, the guided experience for benefits elections can give employees increased convenience with improved navigation and increased confidence with side-by-side plan comparisons and embedded instructional text. Additionally, employees can update dependent information and manage beneficiaries directly from the benefits enrollment process, which helps further streamline the enrollment experience.  

疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Time Tracking

We are thrilled to share the launch of a new time sheet experience that integrates the latest version of My Timesheet in 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA with 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors. Employees can now record time for payroll, as well as against activities and cost objects, from a single time sheet across applications. This helps organizations leverage real-time connectivity between HR and finance operations to keep track of employee activity and labor costs and to pay employees accurately and on time.

Additionally, a new monthly calendar view for time sheets can give employees and managers a complete picture of recorded time over a month. Users can drill down into specific days and submit or approve time for pay periods beyond a week, such as biweekly or monthly.

For managers, a new time approval center helps simplify approvals with a centralized dashboard highlighting anomalies for swift resolution. Managers can monitor team working hours effectively, helping to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing.

疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Onboarding

With enhancements to the onboarding journey experience, new hires can now use the new Your Onboarding Checklist page to reference and complete all tasks 鈥 onboarding data collection, compliance tasks, additional onboarding tasks, and exploring the onboarding guide 鈥 from one place with a single view. Available for new hires, rehires, internal hires, and employees with global assignments, this improved experience can save time for onboarding participants while helping to ensure productivity from the start.

We founded our first company at 17 and, as time went on, we created our first professional application 鈥 a mini ERP system to help photographers with their business. With that, I began to realize the power of technological improvements for businesses and how enterprise software impacts lives in general.

For example, the introduction of low-code/no-code has made application development accessible to everyone in an organization 鈥 with or without a technical background 鈥 to improve experiences for everyone. Just take Dak, the then 12-year-old junior app developer from Massachusetts, who was part of my . With 疯拍传媒 Build solutions, Dak was able to develop all kinds of apps and publish them to a wide audience, such as the 鈥淜nowledge 4 Ever鈥 app that offers kids a playful learning experience during summer break.

Then, there are cloud technologies that further boost accessibility and offer other benefits. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has put more power into more hands. Adoption Can Be Challenging

The inclusion of a vector engine further enables customers to build that combine the natural intuition of human interaction with powerful machine learning and multi-model processing capabilities.

The vector engine in 疯拍传媒 HANA Cloud provides the ability to store and compare vectors using SQL. Determining similarity between vectors enables use cases such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), recommendations, classifications, clustering, and more. Key benefits of 疯拍传媒 HANA Cloud vector engine include:

  • Simplify data architecture and security with a single multi-model database with SQL interaction
  • Gain new insights by combining spatial, graph, JSON, and relational data with vector queries

Semantic onboarding provides a seamless import of semantically rich objects from 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA and 疯拍传媒 BW/4HANA into 疯拍传媒 Datasphere. Now, we are taking the next step by adding support for 疯拍传媒 HANA Cloud and 疯拍传媒 data products through the same unified onboarding experience.

Customers will be able to combine their 疯拍传媒 HANA Cloud modeling approach with 疯拍传媒 Datasphere by importing calculation views into the data layer of 疯拍传媒 Datasphere. This preserves the semantic information such as measures, attributes, hierarchies, aggregations, and currencies/units, while keeping 疯拍传媒 HANA Cloud and 疯拍传媒 Datasphere objects in sync — allowing customers to leverage their prior investments in 疯拍传媒 HANA modeling.

Likewise, semantic onboarding of 疯拍传媒 data products will enable inheritance of business context from 疯拍传媒 line-of-business applications and industry solutions. By providing the semantics of the source systems and transferring that into the business data fabric as a foundation, 疯拍传媒 Datasphere drastically improves the analytic workflow and accelerates and simplifies data-driven insights.

Collibra AI Governance Integration with 疯拍传媒 Solutions

The 疯拍传媒 and Collibra partnership enables end-to-end data governance and delivers trusted data to all users across the business data fabric. As more tasks and decisions are automated by AI within critical business processes, the need to extend governance to AI has also become apparent.

The partnership with Collibra is being expanded to address the data and AI governance needs of joint customers via Collibra AI Governance. We will build tailored integrations between Collibra AI Governance and 疯拍传媒 solutions to connect the data used for AI with the models themselves in a single platform, allowing enterprises to track and manage their AI development efforts.

  • Customers will better understand data lineage and metadata of 疯拍传媒 data that is utilized in AI modeling. With that, users can see what data their AI models were trained on to ensure that the data is accurate and from a trusted source.
  • Customers will benefit from a single view to understand what AI models exist in their organization, and what data is being used to power them. AI/machine learning models created with 疯拍传媒 technology will be registered with the Collibra AI Governance platform.

This extension of the 疯拍传媒 partnership with Collibra will increase transparency and accountability for organizations, and help ensure that regulatory, compliance, and privacy policies are being met. More importantly, it will build user trust by preventing biased decision-making, inaccurate recommendations, and other risks arising from AI.

Core to the 疯拍传媒 data strategy is providing customers with the ability to interoperate with the world鈥檚 leading data and AI vendors through an open data ecosystem. To this end, the newly enhanced Confluent integration enables real-time streaming of data to and from 疯拍传媒 Datasphere.

First, the outbound capabilities were extended by taking advantage of Confluent鈥檚 proprietary schema registry capabilities. Second, the Confluent schema registry will be used to enable seamless consumption of Confluent data within 疯拍传媒 Datasphere.

The integration is specifically tailored to Confluent and provides a superior user experience for joint customers. It allows connections on the application level without additional custom application development. The integration is a pre-established replication flow in 疯拍传媒 Datasphere, which already includes delta and real-time processing natively. This makes the process very efficient as it does not force customers to load all the data at every step, but only when data has changed.

The first integration for data ingestion into Kafka and Confluent is generally available. Additional capabilities for Confluent specific outbound and inbound integration will be generally available at the end of Q1 and Q3, respectively.

Transform Planning with a Business Data Fabric

疯拍传媒 Analytics Cloud for Planning Deep Integration to 疯拍传媒 Datasphere

疯拍传媒 Datasphere and 疯拍传媒 Analytics Cloud for planning will be more closely integrated to expand the business data fabric to planning use cases. 疯拍传媒 Analytics Cloud planning models can be deployed into 疯拍传媒 Datasphere, bringing plan and actuals data together for real-time steering.

Through a reduction in both data footprint and modeling efforts, 疯拍传媒 Analytics Cloud extends planning functionality via 疯拍传媒 Datasphere and its native capabilities for transformation and integration. This reduces the complexity and risk inherent in storing multiple copies of data which is prevalent today.

疯拍传媒 Analytics Cloud for planning will have live access to actual and plan data for extended planning and analysis scenarios, including the live usage of master data. With this, 疯拍传媒 Datasphere will become the platform on which planning processes and tools can integrate.

How Generative AI for Business Is Creating a New Playbook for Value 听 /2024/02/how-generative-ai-for-business-is-creating-a-new-playbook-for-value/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 10:05:00 +0000 /?p=222437 Every technology conversation today centers around the transformative potential of generative AI for the future. But the reality is, it鈥檚 already happening today. And听while its capabilities are noteworthy, the real promise of generative AI for business is not what it can do so much as the value it can create.

In my role at 疯拍传媒, I speak to business leaders all the time about the value that generative AI can add to their business in ways they might not even realize, and I hear countless stories about how it is already starting to do that. One of my favorite examples is one that 疯拍传媒 announced last week in an arena that is near and dear to me: finding and developing the next generation of star athletes.

As someone who used to play and coach basketball in Australia, I have had a lifelong appreciation of coaching but also of听scouting talent. Scouting is a discipline where art truly meets science, where experience and intuition are strengthened by the objective reality revealed by data.

While professional scouting has been around for a very long time, as more data on players becomes available, more teams are using it as听a competitive advantage. But that鈥檚 not as easy as it sounds. While the sophistication of scouting reports is impressive, the process of creating and using them effectively has never been efficient. When you consider how many potential young star athletes there are in the world, you can see how this would create an enormous amount of scouting reports to go through in a short period of time. The problem gets even more daunting when you consider that they are written in different languages and in different writing styles.听

In short, it鈥檚听exactly the kind of challenge that generative AI for business is built to solve.

For proof of that, just look at the German professional soccer clubs FC Bayern Munich and Hertha BSC. For a long time, both clubs have employed talent scouts who travel the world watching matches and collecting reams of data about players in the hope of finding the next great star before any of their competitors do.

But to show how this could be done better, 疯拍传媒 collaborated with FC Bayern Munich and Hertha BSC on a prototype. It uses generative AI to create automated summaries and recommendations of the reports created by their different scouts in different parts of the world and makes them available to club executives simply by asking for them in their natural language.

For example, imagine a German-speaking manager of the club being able ask for a key summary in 100 words or less of a scouting report on a young player who was scouted in Argentina and written in Spanish. That same manager can also ask it to compare two players based on their just their defensive skills or听endurance. While translation apps听can听translate听an听entire report from Spanish to German,听it takes a large language model (LLM) to create these summaries and competitive analyses on demand using natural language commands — essentially just the information that club executives really need to make informed decisions fast.

This is exactly what the prototype allowed these clubs to do. It听took听a time-consuming task and automated it in an intelligent way to make it useful. As a result, we will soon be rolling out this capability as part of our sports management suite, , which has already been helping athletes and teams get better results in their sport while also creating better experiences for their fans since 2015.

Why should business leaders care about better scouting reports? Two reasons: first, because they face many of the same challenges in their own business, needing to harness the power of their data quickly on demand for competitive advantage. And second, because generative AI is not just a specific solution for a specific problem.听Its true magic is that it is also scalable across an entire enterprise to address other business needs, from financing and supply chain management to procurement, travel, trainings, and more. For example, when generative AI is combined with 疯拍传媒 Business Technology Platform (疯拍传媒 BTP), businesses have the ability to write code, keeping their core clean and building generative AI extensions to further scale impact.

There is simply no doubt that data is the playbook of champions in sports. But it is also creating a new playbook of value in business. In hindsight, we know this was a revolutionary moment, which made the internet accessible to billions of people worldwide and ushered in an era of rapid digitalization.

Today, we鈥檙e at a revolutionary moment of similar proportions. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has gone from niche technology to a topic of global discussion within little more than a year. It has happened at a critical moment, with the world facing multiple geopolitical, economic, and climate crises.

While these challenges urgently require our attention, global human, environmental, and financial resources are already stretched. Generative AI, however, offers hope that we can address all these competing priorities simultaneously. In other words, we鈥檒l be able to achieve more with less.

Accelerating Change

The enormous potential of generative AI is widely acknowledged, yet there is one key area where its impact for good has yet to be fully realized. If we apply generative AI to how we run business — as a tool to transform companies, supply chains, and entire industries — we鈥檒l accelerate the evolution of our world economy into one that is more sustainable, resilient, equitable, and prosperous.

Generative AI for business can, for example, help find better and faster solutions to the questions millions of organizations around the world face today. For example:

  • What steps do I need to take to make my company carbon neutral?
  • How can I improve the availability of critical supplies?
  • What can I do to make my business more productive and competitive?
  • How do we skill and reskill our workforce to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow?

Relying on the recommendations provided by generative AI for such critical matters, however, requires the underlying technology to be extremely trustworthy — much more so than in the consumer application space.

Building Trust in AI

Trustworthy means, first, that generative AI for business has to be relevant. AI can only be as good as the data it is trained on, and the generic data used for today鈥檚 most famous large language models (LLMs) will not help companies address their very granular problems. To provide context-specific proposals, relevant AI for business must train and work with real-life enterprise data.

Second, generative AI for business has to be reliable. The stakes in business can be very high: single decisions can affect thousands of customers, colleagues, and the company鈥檚 long-term future. That鈥檚 why business AI outputs must be provided with the greatest accuracy and quality. And, while AI 鈥渉allucinations鈥 may be entertaining in the consumer world, they鈥檙e a no-go in business.

Third, generative AI for business has to be responsible. There is an ongoing discussion about how AI models trained on and working with public Internet data may infringe on privacy and copyright regulations. In the business world, this kind of 鈥済ray zone鈥 mode of operation is unthinkable.

For businesses to trust generative AI, they need to be sure their data is handled safely and confidentially. They need to be sure that generative AI tools respect and observe data privacy, data ownership, and data access restrictions by their very design, and that they operate only in areas where explicit consent has been given.

These three 鈥淩鈥漵 — relevance, reliability, responsibility — are the cornerstones of trustworthy AI for the business world. They are also key to building trust in technology as a tool to tackle the biggest challenges of our time.

AI: Act, Don鈥檛 Hesitate /2024/01/ai-act-dont-hesitate/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 07:00:00 +0000 /?p=221511 Artificial intelligence (AI) is here, whether we like it or not. In my opinion, the rapid rise of generative AI can be attributed to three factors:

  • Firstly, technological progress, as improved AI architectures and available data have enabled models to perform impressively.
  • Secondly, an economic effect as successful platforms of the past, such as the Internet and the cloud, experienced breakthroughs when marginal costs approached zero. That was the birth of platform innovation. In the case of the Internet, for example, the cost of distributing increasing amounts of content approached zero. When it comes to content creation, we are also seeing the same thing now with generative AI. Therefore, AI is not just hype, but an innovation platform.
  • Thirdly, we are witnessing a growing social acceptance. Generative AI was brought into the consciousness of the general public as millions of users suddenly gained access, seemingly overnight, to language models like ChatGPT and tried them out for themselves.

AI is powerful, but not all-powerful. Artificial intelligence are big words. Smart neural networks and models excite us because they are designed to mimic human patterns as closely as possible. They can offer solutions for certain types of problems. What they can’t do is find a solution to a previously unsolved problem and compete with the inexhaustible creativity and empathy of humans.

Recently, I was asked to name an example when AI really 鈥榳owed鈥 me. For me, it was the moment I read that ChatGPT had passed the medical exam in the U.S. My wife is a doctor, so I’m somewhat familiar with medicine and everyday hospital life. Will AI replace humans here? No. Will technology like AI improve the lives of healthcare workers and thus patients? I believe so. AI creates space for professionals where they are most needed.

AI is changing everything. Are we just going along with this change or are we boldly leading the way? We are at a crucial point where generative AI will also significantly change business processes in companies. considers AI to be a productivity booster and predicts worldwide increases in the trillions. This is urgently needed if we look at demographic trends and the growing shortage of skilled workers. Provided that companies use AI consistently, this much is certain: AI will revolutionize the way we work and live.

AI will shape our country. The question is whether we see it as a threatening competitor or a helpful companion. It is up to us to decide whether these significant changes will provide a boost to innovation in Germany and Europe. Germany, and indeed each of us, must adapt to change in order to remain globally competitive. It is important to recognize and minimize the risks, but also to see the opportunities as chances.

So, what do we need to do in order to seize this opportunity for Germany? 

Use Strengths and Competitive Advantages

According to an , systems with generative AI capabilities can contribute to approximately 鈧330 billion of future value creation in the German economy. We would be able to gain a competitive advantage if AI is value-oriented, transparent, and explainable. A suitable legal framework with high ethical standards promotes the ability to innovate; over-regulation would have the opposite effect. We should not categorically classify generative AI as high-risk, but rather leave room for innovation.

We are moving in the right direction with the EU AI Act鈥檚 risk-based approach. And when the various regulations on AI and data protection interact, we are on the right track. Because there can be no compromises in the use of AI when it comes to business-critical processes and decisions.

Therefore, at 疯拍传媒, we see it as our duty to deliver responsible, reliable, and business-relevant AI results. That is why we are looking at how to best utilize the various models to provide value to customers. The models behave very differently. We see ourselves as a driving force in terms of enterprise AI. However, we do not rely solely on our own expertise, but collaborate with research institutions and leading providers of generative AI.

Our credo is: AI is a natural part of our software and intuitively integrated into processes and applications. Why? Because for us, it鈥檚 not about writing a poem with AI, but about using AI in a specific business context based on real-time data — and, when necessary, to support business-critical decisions.

To make this possible, we are working on our own foundation model, which is trained on the data of thousands of customers that have consented to the use of their data. AI models trained on publicly available data do not have this valuable context. Therefore, while they may pass a medical exam because the knowledge is available on the Internet, they will not be able to answer complex questions in the context of a company. Because AI is only as good as the data it relies on. This includes filtering out biased data or queries.

Promote a Climate of Innovation and Openness to Technology

Currently, are developed in the U.S. and 15% in China. This is also due to the willingness to invest. The fact that the German government will is a positive signal, but it is not enough. The private sector also needs to invest significantly more across all industries. Additionally, the “can do” mentality is more pronounced elsewhere. Of the 1,300 worldwide, only 36 are in Germany. Our AI research is among the best; however, the insights rarely lead to companies being created.

We do not lack knowledge in Germany, we lack the will to implement it. And according to the , there is also a lack of computing power and a supercomputing infrastructure for AI.

We should also strengthen small and midsize enterprises (SMEs). As the backbone of the German economy, SMEs must receive the necessary support — including from the public sector — to drive AI forward. According to a , 15% of all companies are already using AI. But this is not yet the urgently needed boost to AI innovation. At least 68% understand the importance of AI and consider AI to be the most important future technology, but too few are taking action.

This clearly shows that most people are looking into AI. But for many companies, AI is not yet an issue. This gap needs to be closed so that in the future not just a minority but a majority of companies use AI. We must act instead of hesitating!

Culturally Embedding a Readiness for Change and Lifelong Learning

听Innovation starts in the mind. Every company wants employees who think like entrepreneurs. Those who don’t want to wait for something coming from other corners of the world. But for that, we need to overcome our reservations towards new technologies. Fears are blocking our view of opportunities and companies have a duty to act now. Transparency is the most important means to alleviate employees’ concerns about automation and AI.

AI will not make humans redundant, but it will change our existing professions. Well-trained professionals are and will remain indispensable, and AI can help to counteract the shortage of skilled workers to some extent. Not only the technologies themselves, but above all the responsible handling of data must be an integral part of school education. Similarly, companies should integrate AI into their company’s further education.

But what is particularly important is that for most professionals, it is not about understanding AI in every detail. There are experts for that, just as there are experts who design complex manufacturing machines. It is about developing the skills of the future: critical thinking and the ability to assess information and above all, empathy. Putting oneself in other people’s position is the core competency of the future! These are skills that make humans unique.

Therefore, I do not see AI as an apocalypse, but rather as one of our best chances for renewal and progress. Because the interaction between humans and machines is not a duel, but a duet.
