Q: How would you describe the role of Customer Support in 疯拍传媒鈥檚 success?

A: Customer support is a differentiating factor among companies that are equally positioned in functional richness, usability, quality, deployability, or configurability. While signing up a new customer is considered a huge win, being able to delight and retain the customer is equally important.

Consumers have driven this shift with their increased awareness of environmental issues, ethical concerns, and desire to support products which are eco-friendly, ethically sourced, and produced under fair labor conditions.

Companies that prioritize sustainability in their operations, such as using recycled materials, reducing carbon emissions, or supporting social causes, are gaining popularity among consumers. But those consumers demand proof of these values and product promises at the point of sale.

鈥淭he rise of sustainability isn’t just a movement; it is a shift in consumer consciousness,鈥 said Dania Fayyaz, 疯拍传媒 North America sustainability program manager. 鈥淭oday’s consumers are redefining their purchasing patterns, opting for products and brands that align with their values, and driving a demand for eco-conscious practices and ethical sourcing.鈥 In her conversations with retailers that visited 疯拍传媒鈥檚 booth at NRF 2024, the world鈥檚 largest retail fair, she saw a high interest in sustainability solutions.

When the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) comes into effect for large enterprises later this year all products sold in the EU containing palm oil, cocoa, soy, rubber, cattle/leather, coffee, wood, and their derivatives will need proof that their harvest didn鈥檛 contribute to deforestation. Non-compliance will result in potential fines of up to 4% of companies鈥 EU annual turnover. To help businesses simplify this complex task, the 疯拍传媒 Green Token solution can track the geolocation of where raw materials are harvested and automate the creation of due diligence statements (DDS). As retail stores often face staffing challenges, this can empower people in sales and marketing teams instead of replacing them. From Werner鈥檚 perspective, an AI-empowered workplace will attract new employees.

Hannover Messe: What Can AI Do for Manufacturing? /2024/05/hannover-messe-ai-manufacturing/ Thu, 02 May 2024 11:15:00 +0000 /?p=224550 At this year鈥檚 Hannover Messe trade fair, 疯拍传媒 and its partners showed how they are embedding artificial intelligence (AI) in their products to help companies achieve new levels of excellence in manufacturing and other industries.

The glass bottles on the high-speed filling line made quiet clinking sounds as they sped around the bend of the track. The visitors to the 疯拍传媒 booth at the internationally renowned industrial trade fair were waiting for the moment when an optical sensor, using AI support, spotted the bottle that was only three-quarters full and kicked it out of the line and into a defects bay. 鈥淭his system has a capacity of 6,400 bottles per hour,鈥 said a grinning Ben Hughes from 疯拍传媒鈥檚 Solution & Innovation Experience team. 鈥淚n comparison, the original system from our partner can fill 50,000 bottles, but that would be much too loud here at the trade fair booth.鈥

The showcase demonstrated how the cloud-based 疯拍传媒 Digital Manufacturing solution could serve as the process order management system for 疯拍传媒 customers, whether they typically work with a lot size of one or with continuous manufacturing at higher speeds. The purchase order could have come from an 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA system, for instance, and ended here with execution in production. 鈥淲e can see the hardware integration with our own eyes,鈥 said Hughes.

AI was also involved: a camera captured the fill level of each bottle. If it was outside the defined tolerance, the bottle was rejected and this information was sent to the 疯拍传媒 system. A manufacturer could use this data to calculate the production costs for the system and the profitability of every work center, all with AI support. The data from all systems would give experts and management insights into how well the production process was working. This, in turn, would help improve planning.

A Fleet of Robots Delivers Materials

It demonstrated a fleet of autonomous transport robots that delivered a variety of parts for a valve from storage to assembly stations. Thanks to the fleet control software with embedded AI from 疯拍传媒 partner , the robots from different manufacturers worked together seamlessly, making autonomous, situational decisions as to which station should assemble or disassemble the parts. The scenario demonstrated that 疯拍传媒 systems can also implement modular production, which is typically used in manufacturing scenarios involving many variants and low to medium product volumes. 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA, 疯拍传媒 Extended Warehouse Management, and 疯拍传媒 Digital Manufacturing were deployed here.

The 鈥淚ndustrial Metaverse鈥 showcase was another big draw. It let visitors to the 疯拍传媒 booth put themselves in the shoes of a systems operator, using VR (virtual reality) glasses to inspect a system virtually, even if the manufacturing was taking place on the opposite side of the globe. The 鈥淚njection Molding Machine鈥 scenario vividly demonstrated how planning and manufacturing dovetail in integrated, agile, made-to-order production, as the machine produced colorful recycled plastic cups for guests at the end of the process.

The World鈥檚 Largest Industrial Trade Fair

The guiding theme of Hannover Messe 2024 was 鈥淓nergizing a sustainable industry.鈥 Nearly 4,000 exhibitors from 60 countries presented solutions for a high-performance, sustainable industry. As part of an industrial ecosystem, they showed how carbon neutrality can be achieved through electrification, digitalization, and automation.

Companies from Germany, China, Turkey, the U.S., Italy, and France booked the largest exhibition spaces. Around 1,600 speakers appeared on the venue鈥檚 11 conference stages. This year鈥檚 partner country was Norway.

Under its motto 鈥淏ring out new manufacturing excellence,鈥 疯拍传媒 demonstrated how it is using AI to advance manufacturing processes, among other solutions, at its more than 1,000-square-meter booth in Hall 15. Visitors to 疯拍传媒鈥檚 booth had the opportunity to see 27 product demonstrations and nine interactive showcases. We have also added more than 15 new capabilities in this release to help both managers and employees get work done in a conversational way, such as creating or changing a position, creating spot awards, clocking in and out, and viewing pay statements as well as time capabilities like requesting time off, checking leave balances, and syncing holidays to Outlook calendars while managers can review and approve time off. We are also introducing a new org chart experience with a refreshed look and feel. With this release, we are pleased to introduce a new benefits enrollment experience for insurance, savings, and pension benefit types. Available on both desktop and mobile, the guided experience for benefits elections can give employees increased convenience with improved navigation and increased confidence with side-by-side plan comparisons and embedded instructional text. Additionally, employees can update dependent information and manage beneficiaries directly from the benefits enrollment process, which helps further streamline the enrollment experience.  

疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Time Tracking

We are thrilled to share the launch of a new time sheet experience that integrates the latest version of My Timesheet in 疯拍传媒 S/4HANA with 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors. Employees can now record time for payroll, as well as against activities and cost objects, from a single time sheet across applications. This helps organizations leverage real-time connectivity between HR and finance operations to keep track of employee activity and labor costs and to pay employees accurately and on time.

Additionally, a new monthly calendar view for time sheets can give employees and managers a complete picture of recorded time over a month. Users can drill down into specific days and submit or approve time for pay periods beyond a week, such as biweekly or monthly.

For managers, a new time approval center helps simplify approvals with a centralized dashboard highlighting anomalies for swift resolution. Managers can monitor team working hours effectively, helping to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing.

疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Onboarding

With enhancements to the onboarding journey experience, new hires can now use the new Your Onboarding Checklist page to reference and complete all tasks 鈥 onboarding data collection, compliance tasks, additional onboarding tasks, and exploring the onboarding guide 鈥 from one place with a single view. Available for new hires, rehires, internal hires, and employees with global assignments, this improved experience can save time for onboarding participants while helping to ensure productivity from the start.

We founded our first company at 17 and, as time went on, we created our first professional application 鈥 a mini ERP system to help photographers with their business. With that, I began to realize the power of technological improvements for businesses and how enterprise software impacts lives in general.

For example, the introduction of low-code/no-code has made application development accessible to everyone in an organization 鈥 with or without a technical background 鈥 to improve experiences for everyone. Just take Dak, the then 12-year-old junior app developer from Massachusetts, who was part of my . With 疯拍传媒 Build solutions, Dak was able to develop all kinds of apps and publish them to a wide audience, such as the 鈥淜nowledge 4 Ever鈥 app that offers kids a playful learning experience during summer break.

Then, there are cloud technologies that further boost accessibility and offer other benefits. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has put more power into more hands. Looking back at our yearly analyses of HR meta-trends, we saw the hybrid work topic shift from a focus on remote work as a reactive tactic to protect employees鈥 health and safety in 2020, to a focus on flexibility in 2021, to maintaining productivity and collaboration while working flexibly in 2022, and finally to an emphasis on underlying flexibility and the need for and benefit of malleable guidelines and principles in 2023. With the recent increase in partial and full return-to-office (RTO) policies, 2024 trends data suggests that the pendulum has swung back to hybrid, referring specifically to work location versus a broader perspective centered on flexibility.

Companies in 2024 will continue to experiment with motivating employees to return to the office in ways that promote productivity, collaboration, and cost savings but don鈥檛 alienate their top talent. But some organizations are focusing more on redesigning the nature of work rather than just mandating where or when work gets done.

Here, five 疯拍传媒 employees share about their roles, motivations, and tips for anyone wanting to step into AI. The women 鈥 Khawla Mallat, Camila Lombana Diaz, Xin Chen, Nadine Hoffmann, and Puntis Palazzolo 鈥 span four countries and three areas: Data Science Engineering, Product Management, and AI Ethics.

Data Science Engineering

Dr. Khawla Mallat, Security and Quantum Exploration Team, 疯拍传媒 France

鈥淏e ready to be challenged all times,鈥 says Mallat, if you want to build a career in AI.

Unlike most data scientists at 疯拍传媒, Mallat does not work directly on the product but is firmly anchored in researching and addressing 鈥渟ome of the technical challenges related to AI, namely fairness, explainability, privacy, and security.鈥

Prior to joining 疯拍传媒 two years ago, Mallat was confronted with the unintended prejudices of face analysis systems. Certain demographic groups, explains Mallat, used to be inadvertently omitted or underrepresented in the underlying data sets, leading to shortcomings in the face analysis capabilities. Such cases highlight the broader issue of bias鈥痠n other鈥疉I applications. In鈥痑reas like HR, she continues, removing personal details in data sets might seem to solve鈥痶he bias issues, but AI can still infer these details.鈥疶his leads to potentially鈥痓iased outcomes and the lack of explainability in AI models makes identification of such biases鈥痙ifficult. Letting data sets like this take root and grow into powerful data models not subject to scrutiny will only magnify the inherent bias or discrimination.

Today Mallat鈥檚 passion for addressing such unfairness aligns well with her role of identifying the inherent risks of AI, educating teams about them, and defining technological solutions to mitigate them.

鈥淲e need to adopt an interdisplinary approach to AI, with experts from ethics, legal compliance, and domain experts, for example, and abstract ourselves from the role of data scientists to succeed,鈥 says Mallat.

鈥淚 love working in AI,鈥 she continues. 鈥淓verything is progressing at an incredible pace so if you want to work in AI, you have to have a certain thirst for knowledge. And, regardless of your role, you must take AI ethics 鈥 regulations and regulatory frameworks 鈥 seriously because these have huge implications not only for 疯拍传媒 but for individuals and societies in general.鈥


AI Ethics

Camila Lombana Diaz, Responsible AI, Germany

鈥淎I is a mirror of our capacities as humans. And the biggest responsibility for those working in AI is, what do we want to see in that mirror?鈥 explains Lombana Diaz, AI ethics research expert in the AI Ethics/Responsible AI team located in the 疯拍传媒 Business AI growth area.

Lombana Diaz鈥檚 responsibilities include maturing and applying the 疯拍传媒 AI Global Ethics policy, creating and delivering enablement content, defining AI personas and processes, and giving guidance to make responsible AI an operational reality for development, as exemplified in 疯拍传媒鈥檚 AI ethics handbook.

When she joined 疯拍传媒 eight years ago, initially as a UX designer and then a strategic designer, machine learning and AI were core topics. But it became increasingly clear to her that 鈥渦nderstanding the human implications of AI for a responsible and ethical AI demands a human-centric perspective.鈥

Even though 疯拍传媒 is committed to the ethical development of AI 鈥 developers must now complete AI ethics assessment tasks and a steering committee scrutinizes all high-risk use cases 鈥 Lombana Diaz emphasizes the need to remain focused on the inherent risks and unintentional harms that AI may present. Part of her role is an ongoing assessment of the technology, identifying risks and limitations and communicating them to different teams.

As AI continues to evolve at speed, so do the roles. Lombana Diaz is passionate about seeing AI beyond the confines of a technology-centric perspective. 鈥淎I is now an omnipresent technology shaping our daily lives; hence, we need individuals working in the field who challenge AI technology to be community centric. AI ethics is a space for experimental, open, curious, collaborative, and human-centered individuals,鈥 and, she concludes, 鈥渢he time to step into AI and build a career is now because, unlike the technology, the business of AI, the legal and ethical aspects, are still being shaped.鈥


Data Science Engineering 

Dr. Xin Chen, 疯拍传媒 HANA Machine Learning, China

鈥淚 have always enjoyed working at 疯拍传媒 since joining nine years ago. I like the work environment and the colleagues here and I really want to encourage others to join us here in AI,鈥 says Chen, data science researcher on the 疯拍传媒 HANA Machine Learning team.

The team works on a toolbox providing different kinds of machine learning algorithms for regression, classification, clustering, and so on for the 疯拍传媒 HANA predictive analysis library.

Part of Chen鈥檚 role is investigating research papers on the latest machine learning algorithms and, together with the team, deciding which algorithms would be beneficial to customers. Once the machine learning algorithms are implemented, Chen and the team evaluate feedback from customers and deliver enhancements.

Recently Chen and her team researched machine learning algorithms investigating notions of fairness. 鈥淔airness is a very hot topic just now,鈥 she says. 鈥淚n mathematics, there are different notions of fairness, but it is still a complex and evolving topic.鈥

And Chen鈥檚 advice to would-be AI developers? 鈥淐ritical thinking will become even more important to understand what solutions to offer, to make judgements on your own innovations, and to know if the generated output is right or wrong,鈥 she says, reflecting on how this skill will become ever more important for future AI developers.


Product Management

Nadine Hoffmann, 疯拍传媒 Business AI, Germany

鈥淚 translate and I want to fascinate,鈥 says Hoffmann, global AI product manager in the 疯拍传媒 Business AI growth area.

Even after more than 20 years at 疯拍传媒, disruptive ideas and mindset shifts still energize Hoffmann. To be an expert in new technologies, and to be energized and enthused by the constant volume and speed of them, is critical to being successful in the AI product management teams of today because product management is the glue between partners, customers, the field, and development.

鈥淥n the one hand,鈥 says Hoffmann, 鈥湻枧拇 has data scientists, software engineers, and researchers taking our software to the next level. And on the other, there are experts defining the legal and ethical guardrails.鈥 Product management must be fluent in both 鈥渢echnical software speak鈥 and 鈥渃ustomer speak鈥 to understand desires, pain points, and business processes.

Pivoting between these and aligning customer speak with technical software speak is akin to being a聽 translator, Hoffmann says. Our software will only meet the requirements of customers if there is a common understanding between the teams responsible for the technological development, the legal teams responsible for ethical and legal compliance, and the customer.

Regardless of the latest innovation, Hoffmann says success in product management is 鈥渘ot only about convincing teams and partners about the ease and positiveness of a technology, but also infusing them with a fascination about it so that they become passionate advocates and are intrinsically motivated to find out more by themselves.鈥


Data Science Engineering

Puntis Palazzolo, AI Strategist & Ethics Lead, 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors, U.S.

鈥淭he ethical challenges presented by AI have transcended the scope of individual enterprises, extending beyond entities like 疯拍传媒. It is crucial that we collaborate with others to collectively address AI鈥檚 emerging concerns,” says Palazzolo, who leads the 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors Data Science team.

The team acts as a consulting service on AI use cases for product teams in 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors, analyzing the problem, developing code and algorithms, and building proof-of-concepts. Successful AI use cases are then integrated into 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors solutions.

Much of the data in 疯拍传媒 SuccessFactors solutions is sensitive customer data. With the dramatic increase in generative AI use cases, safeguarding customer data must take precedence, Palazzolo says. 鈥淕enerative AI is a powerful technology that introduces new challenges, such as hallucinations and automated decision-making. In high-risk sectors like HR, we need to explain how we reach certain decisions, especially when we are impacting people鈥檚 lives.鈥

Palazzolo joined 疯拍传媒 11 years ago and has been based in Palo Alto, California, since 2013, where she represents 疯拍传媒 on 鈥 a collaboration of academia and companies, such as Google and NVIDIA, dedicated to developing safe practices and industry-standard benchmarks to improve AI models.鈥

Her advice to current and would-be AI practitioners? Follow your passion, be ethical, and make your voice heard while we still have time.

鈥淟egislators alone cannot write AI regulations for us because they do not have a full understanding of its complexities,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e cannot solve all the problems by ourselves, but we must make our voices heard to shape the future of AI.鈥

Fairness, Transparency, and Human Involvement: The Ethical Side of Artificial Intelligence /2024/02/ethical-side-of-artificial-intelligence/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 12:15:00 +0000 /?p=222792 Relevant, reliable, and responsible 鈥 those are 疯拍传媒鈥檚 guidelines for the artificial intelligence embedded in its solutions and products. The 鈥渞esponsible鈥 part is being monitored by the software company鈥檚 AI Ethics department, led by Dr. Sebastian Wieczorek.

“At 疯拍传媒, ethics has been part of our research and development of artificial intelligence from the very beginning,” Wieczorek, head of AI Ethics at 疯拍传媒, says. “Every development in the area of AI is deeply aligned with 疯拍传媒鈥檚 values.”

The Beginnings of Artificial Intelligence at 疯拍传媒

Wieczorek was part of 疯拍传媒鈥檚 first AI unit, founded in 2014. “In addition to the technical and product tasks, we have always considered the ethical aspect of our work from the beginning,” he says.

疯拍传媒 was the first European company to define guidelines for dealing with AI and set up a corresponding advisory panel. Wieczorek’s work has always had a technical focus, but he has also been a member of the 疯拍传媒 AI Global Ethics steering committee, a member of the Enquiry Commission on AI in the German Bundestag, and has reported on the uses of artificial intelligence at the EU Parliament.

疯拍传媒 focuses on embedding AI that is relevant, reliable and responsible by design

疯拍传媒 initiated internal processes early on to formulate an approach to ethically unobjectionable AI, which ultimately led to the 疯拍传媒 AI Global Ethics policy.

To address ethical questions, experts must possess deep knowledge about AI technology and also be willing and able to engage in philosophical and moral questions as well as the legal side of technology.

“Our work in AI ethics is somewhat similar to that of a translator,” Wieczorek says. “Technological realities and possibilities have to be 鈥榯ranslated鈥 into the language of philosophy, sociology, and law. The results must then be 鈥榯ranslated鈥 back into technological requirements, so that a constant exchange between the two areas is achieved.”

The Role of Humans

Currently, AI systems cannot develop a motivation of their own or a concept of themselves or the world 鈥 never mind considering, on their own initiative, how to best optimize this world.

“Their purpose and tasks are determined by humans,” Wieczorek emphasizes. “What humans no longer do is define the exact implementation of the task.”

As always, when tasks are delegated 鈥 whether to machines or other people 鈥 it must be ensured that certain rules regarding fairness, transparency, and human participation rights are adhered to in their execution.

“We know less about how decisions are ultimately made when it comes to AI than we do when it comes to conventional software,” Wieczorek says. “Therefore, we must keep the possibility open to intervene if this automation does not work in certain cases as we want it to.”

What such an intervention looks like in individual cases can be quite varied, as the software as a whole and not just individual components must be considered.

The most well-known example of discrimination by intelligent software is the exclusion of historically underrepresented groups in job application processes. The historical data with which the AI is trained may reflect the biased selection criteria of the past. Therefore, it is theoretically possible that the AI may adopt and reproduce these biases for its own selection process.

“Side effects of this kind can occur relatively quickly on a large scale due to the high automation potential of AI software,” Wieczorek says. “Therefore, we must set high standards for the type and manner of automation and have the ability to limit side effects and efficiently reverse them.”

Guidelines for training data sets are neither the only leverage nor a guarantee of maximum fairness.

“There is a chain of things to consider,” Wieczorek says. “The system as a whole must be able to provide guarantees that the evaluation is fair 鈥 its behavior must be impeccable in the overall view.”

A Dedicated Ethics Review for Every AI Use Case

“In the 疯拍传媒 AI Global Ethics policy, it is stipulated that all of our products and solutions that use AI must be monitored from an ethical perspective 鈥 both during the development phase and later, when they are already on the market,” Wieczorek says.

Each AI use case is therefore subject to a separate review, which includes declarations from the product teams on how the use case complies with the guidelines of the 疯拍传媒 AI Global Ethics policy.

After their definition, all use cases undergo a classification process. However, if use cases, for example, make automated decisions that affect people or process personal data, they are automatically considered sensitive and are classified high risk.

“Such use cases then undergo a mandatory review process, which is continuously accompanied by experts, for example from my team,” Wieczorek says. “This way, each individual case is systematically checked for risks, in order to then decide, if necessary, what measures need to be taken to implement the ethical standards prescribed by 疯拍传媒.”

Does the Use of AI Limit Human Responsibility?

Routine tasks taken over by AI are most often already automated to a degree and do not have to be formulated anew every time. But as increasingly personalized tasks are also being taken over by AI, such as through chat interactions, the individual user鈥檚 responsibility grows.

Wieczorek sees a shared responsibility between the AI developer and the user. “Especially with tasks that affect people and have human consequences, we will not shift the responsibility to the products,” he emphasizes.

Those providing an AI application are obligated to provide transparency about its behavior and to clarify what it was designed for 鈥 and what it was not designed for.

This in turn allows users to take on their own responsibility: tasks assigned must adhere to ethical principles and the results must be verified, rather than simply accepted.

It is particularly important for people to still be able to intervene in the functioning of the systems in case an undesired side effect, such as unfair behavior of the system, becomes apparent over time.

“It must always be ensured that humans can review, question, and possibly reverse the decisions made by the AI,” Wieczorek says. “This is the responsibility of the manufacturers of AI systems, as laid out in the 疯拍传媒 AI Global Ethics policy.”
